AboutEmi & Eve brings together artisans from different countries in Asia who recycle and reclaim various materials to create beautiful pieces that tell a story of triumph over adversity.
Cassandra Postema, graduated form Central St Martins with a degree in fashion and textile design. She won the British Council’s New Generation sponsorship award for her clothing designs made from textiles and up-cycled vintage materials she collected on her travels. This put her on the map of the London’s fashion scene such as exhibiting at London Fashion Week in February 2000. However, Cassandra felt constrained by the way the fashion industry operated, and moved to Hong Kong where she started a social enterprise business, working with micro-enterprises and local disadvantaged people across Asia. This first venture came to an end after a whirlwind of experiences that made her feel she had taken a wrong turn. “Ending up broke, living on my friends’ floors and wondering where I had gone wrong with my good intentions,” says Cassandra. However, the seed of building an ethical brand was sown. Inspired by the disadvantaged communities that Cassandra worked with in the past, she brings together artisans and crafters from Thailand, China and Cambodia to produce beautiful items. A community post-2004 tsunami in coastal Thailand weaves new hope and future into kaleidoscope tapestries. A group of disabled women from all over China transform these textiles into colourful bags with every stitch sewn. Bullet and bombshell casings are smelted by a Cambodian family complete the look with a brass focal point. Emi & Eve was born. These wonderful and unique pieces represent friendship, peace and hope, the essence of Emi & Eve. “Sometimes, life is like a big messed up super doodle. But I discovered that you can colour in the spaces and turn it into art.” - Cassandra Postema News & Press
